Swap-free accounts: how Islamic forex trading works
A swap-free account removes overnight interest from a trade, and a fixed admin fee usually takes its place.
Updated Oct 2026 · how we rate brokers
What a swap is, and why it matters for Muslim traders
A swap is the interest a broker pays or charges you for holding a position overnight. If you keep a trade open past the daily rollover point, the swap is added to or taken from your account balance. Because that payment is interest, many Muslim traders treat it as riba and look for a way to avoid it.
That is the reason swap-free accounts exist. They are also called Islamic accounts. The broker does not apply the overnight interest charge, so a position can stay open without an interest-based payment attached to it.
The question behind this page, whether forex trading is halal, is a religious question, not a technical one. A swap-free account removes one specific element that many scholars object to. It does not settle every other question about trading, and different scholars hold different views. If the answer matters to you personally, ask someone qualified to give religious advice rather than a broker.

What replaces the swap on a swap-free account
A swap-free account is not free to hold. Most brokers replace the overnight interest with a fixed administration charge. It is usually applied after a set number of days, or on specific instruments, and it is charged per position rather than as a percentage rate.
The exact structure differs from broker to broker. Some charge a flat fee per lot per night. Some waive the charge for the first few days and apply it after that. Some apply it only to certain pairs or metals. None of this is standard, so read the broker's own swap-free page before you open anything.
The practical effect is that holding a position overnight still has a cost. It is just a stated fee instead of a variable interest payment. For a trade you close the same day, the difference is often nothing at all.
What a broker asks for before a withdrawal
- National ID card or passport
- Who you are
- Selfie with the ID document
- That the document is in your hands
Brokers usually also ask for proof of address; requirements differ per firm. Every firm sets its own list, and prints it where the account is opened.
How to check a swap-free account before you fund it
Start with the broker's funding and account terms pages. Look for the words swap-free or Islamic, then find the section that describes the administration fee. If the page does not state when the fee starts and how it is calculated, ask support in writing and keep the reply.
Check the account type against the instrument you plan to trade. A swap-free status that covers major currency pairs may not cover gold, indices or crypto. The broker's product list is the only reliable place to confirm this.
Payment method matters too. Ugandan traders mostly fund accounts through Mobile Money, with MTN MoMo and Airtel Money the common options, and bank transfer or card as alternatives. Confirm on the broker's deposit page whether the swap-free account accepts the method you use, and check any conversion cost inside the Mobile Money app before you send.
How deposits and withdrawals travel

- Mobile wallet — limits set by the wallet provider and the broker
- Airtel Money
- Mobile wallet — limits set by the wallet provider and the broker
- Bank transfer
- Limits set by your bank and the broker
- Card
- Card payment — limits set by your card issuer and the broker
Limits and fees are set by the provider and the broker and change without notice, so they are not printed here. Check the figure in your provider's app and again on the broker's funding page, and take the money out the way you put it in.
The licence question Ugandan traders should ask
The Capital Markets Authority of Uganda regulates unit trust managers, fund managers, investment advisers, stock brokers, custodians, dealers and trustees. An online or leveraged forex broker is not one of those categories. A firm offering that service to Ugandan residents is therefore working under a licence issued somewhere else.
That does not automatically make a broker unsafe, but it changes what you can check. The CMA Uganda licensed persons list at cmauganda.co.ug will not show a retail forex broker, because that is not a category it licenses. You have to look at the regulator in the country where the firm holds its licence.
Trading hours are worth knowing as well, because they fall in your evening. London runs 11:00 to 20:00 EAT and New York runs 15:00 to 00:00 EAT, so the busiest overlap is 15:00 to 20:00 EAT. Tokyo opens 03:00 EAT and Sydney 00:00 EAT. Plan your session around East Africa Time, not a foreign clock.

A register says whether a firm holds a licence on the day you look, and nothing about how it treats clients. The name worth searching is the legal entity in the footer, not the brand above it.
What a swap-free account does not change
It does not remove spread, commission or the risk of loss. Those costs sit in the trade itself and apply whether or not the account is swap-free. A no-swap label is not a cheaper account by default.
It also does not make a strategy profitable. Leverage works the same way in both account types, and losses can exceed what you expected. Treat the swap-free feature as one cost detail among several, not as a reason to trade more.
| Platform | What it is | Who makes it |
|---|---|---|
| MetaTrader 4 | The older standard; expert advisors and a large script ecosystem | MetaQuotes |
| MetaTrader 5 | The newer build; more order types and timeframes | MetaQuotes |
| cTrader | Depth of market and a different order model | Spotware |
| The broker's own app | Usually simpler, and tied to that one firm | The broker |
A platform is software, not a safeguard: the same terminal is offered by licensed and unlicensed firms alike. Licensing lives on the register. Ratings and downloads are not evidence of it.
Why the swap-free label sits on the account type, not on every position you open
Many Ugandan traders assume a swap-free account removes overnight charges from everything they trade. It does not work that way. The exemption is normally tied to specific instruments, and the broker's own product list shows which ones. A position outside that list can still carry an overnight charge.
This distinction matters because a trader may open a swap-free account, then trade a symbol that sits outside the covered set, and only notice the charge on the statement. The label describes the account, not a blanket promise about every market on the platform.
Before placing an order, read the instrument specification inside the trading platform. If the overnight field is blank or marked as not applicable, the exemption applies. If a value appears, the charge applies even though the account is swap-free.

An indicative rate is for sizing a position in your head, not for settling one. What your broker converts at, against this rate, is a cost like any spread.
Fund with Mobile Money in UGX, then check what the broker does with the balance
Mobile Money is the main rail Ugandan traders use to fund a forex account. MTN MoMo and Airtel Money both move UGX quickly, and bank transfer and card are also accepted by many brokers. The account currency the broker holds may not be UGX, so the conversion happens somewhere in the chain.
The failure mode is not the deposit itself. It is the withdrawal. A broker may accept UGX by Mobile Money but pay out through a different method, or to a different name, or after a verification step that was not needed on the way in. Confirm the withdrawal route before funding, not after.
Open the broker's own funding page and read the deposit and withdrawal terms for Uganda. Then check the Mobile Money app for the actual charges your network applies. Neither number should be guessed from a forum post.

Keep your CMA Uganda check and your broker check as two separate steps
The CMA Uganda licensed persons list at cmauganda.co.ug tells you whether a firm holds a licence in Uganda. It does not tell you whether that firm offers a swap-free account, or whether the entity you sign up with is the licensed one. Those are different questions and they need different checks.
A common mistake is to treat one positive result as covering both. A name on the public list is a starting point, not a conclusion. The entity named on your account agreement may sit in another jurisdiction, and the licence may cover a different activity.
Run the two checks in order. First, confirm the firm on the CMA Uganda list. Second, confirm on the broker's own pages that the swap-free account exists for Ugandan residents and that the entity you are contracting with is the one you checked.
| What you see | What to check |
|---|---|
| A fixed monthly return, promised in advance | Ask which licence permits it, then look the firm up on the CMA Uganda licensed persons list. |
| A deposit asked for in gift cards or vouchers | Check the broker's own funding page: firms list bank, card and wallet rails, not vouchers. |
| Someone offering to trade the account for you | Managing money for a client is a separate permission. The register says whether a firm holds it. |
| A withdrawal released only after a new payment | Read the withdrawal terms you agreed to. They do not contain any fee that is invented when a payout is made. |
None of this is a judgement about any firm. Each line is a check you can run yourself, starting at cmauganda.co.ug.
Is forex trading halal if I use a swap-free account?
A swap-free account removes the overnight interest payment, which is the element many Muslim traders object to. It does not resolve every other question about leverage, speculation or the instruments on offer. Scholars differ on those points, so treat the account type as one part of the answer and seek religious guidance for the rest.
Does a swap-free account charge nothing for holding overnight?
Usually it charges a fixed administration fee instead of interest. The trigger point, the amount and the instruments covered vary by broker, and some accounts waive it for the first few nights. The broker's own swap-free terms page is the only place to see the real structure, so read it before funding.
Can I open a swap-free account in Uganda?
You can apply to a broker that offers one, but check where that broker is licensed. The CMA Uganda register at cmauganda.co.ug covers unit trust managers, fund managers, investment advisers, stock brokers, custodians, dealers and trustees, and leveraged forex broking is not among those categories. Funding is usually by Mobile Money through MTN MoMo or Airtel Money, or by bank transfer or card, so confirm the accepted method on the broker's deposit page.
