15:00-20:00 EAT — London / New York overlap, the most liquid hours of the day.

London remains on GMT until 28 March and New York on EDT until 1 November, and the hours are shown for the clocks in force today. Uganda does not change clocks, so each move shifts these local times by an hour and the page is rebuilt on the day it happens.

Every Forex Session in Uganda Time, Start to Finish

Uganda runs on East Africa Time, UTC+3, all year. Forex trades around the clock from Monday morning to Saturday morning, split into four sessions named after the financial centres that dominate each stretch. Here is each one in your local clock: Sydney 00:00 to 09:00 EAT, Tokyo 03:00 to 12:00 EAT, London 11:00 to 20:00 EAT, and New York 15:00 to 00:00 EAT.

The sessions overlap, so the market is never empty during the working week. The quietest stretch is the gap after New York closes and before Sydney opens. If you trade that window, expect thin conditions and wider spreads, because fewer participants are quoting prices.

A session is not a switch that flips at the stated minute. Activity builds and fades around these hours, and public holidays in London, New York or Tokyo can thin out a session that is technically open.

The London and New York Overlap Is the Busiest Window

London and New York overlap from 15:00 to 20:00 EAT. Both centres are active at once, so more buyers and sellers are in the market and price movement is usually at its strongest. For many people trading from Uganda, this is the natural window: it starts in the late afternoon and ends at 8pm, which fits around a normal working day.

The London session on its own, 11:00 to 20:00 EAT, is the single largest window by volume. It covers the European morning and the start of the US day, and it is when the biggest scheduled releases from Europe tend to land.

The New York session, 15:00 to 00:00 EAT, carries US data releases and the American afternoon. It runs late into the Ugandan night, so traders who work daytime jobs often catch only its opening hours.

The Asian Session Is Quiet, and That Suits Some Traders

Tokyo runs 03:00 to 12:00 EAT and Sydney runs 00:00 to 09:00 EAT. These hours overlap heavily, so the Asian block is effectively one long, calmer stretch that ends as London opens. Ranges are often narrower than in the London or New York windows.

That calm cuts both ways. Narrower ranges can mean fewer sudden moves, but they can also mean less opportunity if your approach depends on strong trends. Spreads can be wider in thin conditions, so check the live spread on your platform before you commit.

For someone in Uganda who prefers to trade in the morning before work, the tail end of the Asian session and the London open are the realistic options. The London open at 11:00 EAT often brings a step up in activity.

Brokers usually also ask for proof of address; requirements differ per firm. Every firm sets its own list, and prints it where the account is opened.

Choosing Your Window, and Checking Who You Trade With

Match your trading window to your own schedule first, then to the market. A strategy that needs fast movement will struggle in the Asian afternoon; one that needs calm will struggle in the overlap. Write down the hours you can genuinely watch the screen, then pick the session that fits.

Before funding anything, check the firm against the CMA Uganda licensed persons list at cmauganda.co.ug. That register covers unit trust managers, fund managers, investment advisers, stock brokers, custodians, dealers and trustees. An online or leveraged foreign-exchange broker is not one of those categories, so a firm offering that service to Ugandan residents is working under a licence issued somewhere else.

Funding usually moves through Mobile Money, with MTN MoMo and Airtel Money the common routes, alongside bank transfer and card. Deposit and withdrawal times, limits and any charges sit with the provider and the broker, so read the broker's funding page and your Mobile Money app rather than assuming.

Airtel Money

Bank transfer

Card

Limits and fees are set by the provider and the broker and change without notice, so they are not printed here. Check the figure in your provider's app and again on the broker's funding page, and take the money out the way you put it in.

Why the Same Session Feels Different in Kampala

Session hours are quoted in a foreign city's clock. Uganda sits at UTC+3 all year, so the local start time shifts whenever that city changes its clocks. London and New York both do this, but on different dates. Two shifts, two dates, one local timetable that quietly moves.

That means a window you learned in January may begin an hour later by April. Nothing about the market changed. Only the conversion did. Traders who never recheck the timetable end up arriving late to the busiest part of the day, or waiting through a quiet hour they thought was active.

The fix is simple. Check the session times again after each clock change, not once a year. Write the current local hours somewhere you will see them before you trade. Treat the timetable as something that expires, not something fixed.

A platform is software, not a safeguard: the same terminal is offered by licensed and unlicensed firms alike. Licensing lives on the register. Ratings and downloads are not evidence of it.

Mobile Money Is Fast, and That Speed Has a Trap

Funding an account with MTN MoMo or Airtel Money is the common route in Uganda. It is quick, it works from a phone, and it removes the need for a bank visit. That convenience is real. It also means money can leave your wallet before you have finished thinking.

The trap is timing. A deposit made in seconds can feel like a small action, so it gets repeated. Several small top-ups across a week are harder to track than one deliberate transfer. Before long, the total is larger than intended and no single payment felt significant.

Decide the amount before opening the app, not inside it. Keep the confirmation messages. If you also use bank transfer or card, expect different processing times and check the broker's own funding page for what applies to each method. The app shows your balance. It does not show your plan.

The Session You Trade Should Match the Hours You Actually Keep

The busiest window is not automatically the right one. If the London and New York overlap falls in your working day, fine. If it falls when you are asleep or commuting, the busiest window is the one you will trade worst, tired and rushed.

Quiet sessions suit some people for a different reason. Fewer moves, more time to think, less pressure to react. The Asian session is often described that way. That is a preference, not an advantage. It only helps if you are genuinely awake and able to watch.

Pick the window you can attend consistently for several weeks. Consistency matters more than picking the loudest hours. A trader who watches one session properly learns more than one who checks three sessions badly.

None of this is a judgement about any firm. Each line is a check you can run yourself, starting at cmauganda.co.ug.

Check the Licence Before You Send Anything, Not After

Before funding any account, look up the firm on the CMA Uganda licensed persons list at cmauganda.co.ug. The list is public and maintained by the regulator. It is the first check, and it takes minutes. Do it before a deposit, not after a problem.

A firm may be regulated elsewhere and still appear on that list, or it may not appear at all. Those are different situations and they matter. Do not rely on a broker's own page to tell you it is licensed. Use the regulator's list, then compare what you find with what the firm claims.

If a name is missing, that is information. It does not automatically mean fraud, but it means you cannot confirm the firm against the public register. Ask the firm directly, in writing, and keep the reply. Then decide.

A register says whether a firm holds a licence on the day you look, and nothing about how it treats clients. The name worth searching is the legal entity in the footer, not the brand above it.
