Showing 40 of 92 entries as published by the CMA Uganda on 2026-06-26, broker and dealer licences first. The full list is at cmauganda.co.ug.

Reference only and it can lag. Search the legal entity name from the broker's own footer — not the brand — and confirm the licence covers what you are about to use it for.

The CMA Uganda register of licensed and approved persons covers unit trust managers, fund managers, investment advisers, stock brokers, custodians, dealers and trustees, and an online or leveraged foreign-exchange broker is not one of those categories. A firm offering that service to Ugandan residents is therefore working under a licence issued somewhere else.

Forex Trading Is Legal, but the Licence Comes From Elsewhere

Yes, forex trading is legal in Uganda. You can open an account with an offshore broker and trade currency pairs from Kampala, Entebbe or Gulu without breaking Ugandan law.

The catch is who supervises that broker. The Capital Markets Authority of Uganda, usually shortened to CMA Uganda, keeps a public register called the CMA Uganda licensed persons list at cmauganda.co.ug. That list covers unit trust managers, fund managers, investment advisers, stock brokers, custodians, dealers and trustees.

An online or leveraged foreign-exchange broker is not one of those categories. So a firm offering that service to Ugandan residents is working under a licence issued somewhere else, not a Ugandan one. That does not make it illegal. It does mean your protection depends on the rules of the country where the broker is registered.

A register says whether a firm holds a licence on the day you look, and nothing about how it treats clients. The name worth searching is the legal entity in the footer, not the brand above it.

Check the Register First, Then Check the Licence Abroad

Start at cmauganda.co.ug and open the licensed persons list. Search the broker's name. If it appears, read which category it holds, because the categories above are specific and a dealing licence is not the same as a leveraged forex licence.

If the name is not there, that is expected for most retail forex brokers. Ask the broker directly which regulator licenses it and in which country. A serious firm states this on its website, usually in the footer or on a legal documents page.

Then verify that claim at the regulator's own website, not at a review site or a social media page. Anyone can copy a logo. Only the regulator's register shows whether a licence is real and still active.

How Ugandans Usually Fund a Forex Account

Mobile Money is the main payment rail for Ugandan traders. MTN MoMo and Airtel Money are the two wallets most people use, and many brokers now accept them directly.

Bank transfer and card payments also work with some brokers. Each method has its own processing time and its own charge, and those change, so read the broker's funding page and your Mobile Money app before you send anything.

Withdrawals matter as much as deposits. Check how the broker pays out, whether it returns money to the same wallet or bank account, and how long that takes. Test with a small amount first if you are unsure.

Limits and fees are set by the provider and the broker and change without notice, so they are not printed here. Check the figure in your provider's app and again on the broker's funding page, and take the money out the way you put it in.

Uganda Sits in a Convenient Time Zone for Trading

Uganda uses East Africa Time, EAT, which is UTC+3 all year. Uganda itself never changes clocks, but the centres do, so a session window can land an hour earlier on your clock for part of the year.

Sydney runs 00:00 to 09:00 EAT. Tokyo runs 03:00 to 12:00 EAT. London runs 11:00 to 20:00 EAT. New York runs 15:00 to 00:00 EAT.

The busiest window locally is the London and New York overlap, 15:00 to 20:00 EAT. That is late afternoon into evening in Uganda, which suits people who trade after work. Quiet hours are quiet for a reason: fewer participants can mean wider price swings on thin volume.

London remains on GMT until 28 March and New York on EDT until 1 November, and the hours are shown for the clocks in force today. Uganda does not change clocks, so each move shifts these local times by an hour and the page is rebuilt on the day it happens.

A Licence From Abroad Does Not Register Your Account in Uganda

A common mix-up is thinking that a foreign licence makes a broker answerable to Ugandan authorities. It does not. The licence binds the broker in its home country, and any complaint you raise is handled under that country's rules, not Ugandan law. The CMA Uganda register only tells you who may offer investments inside Uganda.

This matters when something goes wrong. If a broker is not on the CMA Uganda licensed persons list at cmauganda.co.ug, then a dispute about your account sits outside Ugandan regulatory reach. You may still have a contract, but enforcing it means dealing with a foreign regulator and possibly a foreign court.

So treat the two checks as separate questions. One asks whether the broker is allowed to serve Ugandans. The other asks whether it is supervised somewhere at all. A broker can pass the second check and fail the first, and that gap is where most confusion starts.

What a broker asks for before a withdrawal

National ID card or passport
Who you are
Selfie with the ID document
That the document is in your hands

Brokers usually also ask for proof of address; requirements differ per firm. Every firm sets its own list, and prints it where the account is opened.

Keep Your Own Records Before You Need Them

Most funding problems are proved or disproved by paperwork the trader already has, or does not have. Save the confirmation message from your Mobile Money app, the broker deposit reference, and any email confirming the account credit. Screenshots are fine if they show the date, the amount and the reference.

Mobile Money confirmations often live only in an SMS inbox or app history that gets cleared. Export or photograph them while they are fresh. If a deposit is later disputed, a broker support desk will usually ask for the transaction ID rather than a bank statement, and reconstructing that months later is slow.

Keep the same record for withdrawals. Note the date you requested, the date funds left the broker, and the date they reached your Mobile Money wallet. If a step stalls, that timeline is what you send to the broker first, and to the regulator or payment provider only if the broker's own process fails.

A platform is software, not a safeguard: the same terminal is offered by licensed and unlicensed firms alike. Licensing lives on the register. Ratings and downloads are not evidence of it.

Withdrawal Speed Is a Better Test Than Deposit Speed

Deposits are easy to make quick, because that is how brokers win customers. Withdrawals are the real test of how a broker operates. Before funding anything, read the broker's own withdrawal page and note the stated process, the documents required and the channel used to return money.

A frequent failure mode is a withdrawal that must go back through the same method used to deposit. If you funded by card and later closed that card, or funded by Mobile Money from a number you no longer use, the return path can break. Check this before you deposit, not after you want the money out.

Some brokers also require identity documents to be verified before the first withdrawal, even if the deposit went through without them. That is a delay, not necessarily a refusal. Knowing the steps in advance turns a surprise into a task with a known order.

Can I trade forex legally from Uganda?

Yes. Trading forex from Uganda is legal, and there is no rule stopping you from using a broker based abroad. What you should understand is that CMA Uganda does not license online leveraged forex brokers, so your account sits under a foreign regulator's rules. Check that regulator before you deposit.

How do I verify a forex broker if CMA Uganda does not license them?

Open cmauganda.co.ug and search the licensed persons list to see whether the firm appears at all. If it does not, ask the broker which overseas regulator licenses it, then confirm that claim on the regulator's own register. Ignore screenshots, badges and reviews as proof.

What is the best time to trade forex in Uganda?

The London and New York overlap, 15:00 to 20:00 EAT, is when the most trading happens. London alone runs 11:00 to 20:00 EAT and New York runs 15:00 to 00:00 EAT. Pick hours that fit your day, because a session you cannot watch properly is not useful to you.

Leverage cuts both ways: losses on forex and CFDs can exceed what you deposited. Most retail traders lose. None of this is financial advice.
