Position Sizing: Turning a Risk Percentage Into a Lot Size

A lot size is the number of currency units you trade, and it should come from your risk, not your mood.

Figures are computed from an indicative USD/UGX rate pulled 2026-09-28 and a standard lot on a USD-quoted pair. It is only the pip value and conversion rate that vary slightly between brokers — not the method.

Your risk percentage sets the size, not the other way round

Decide first how much of your account you are willing to lose on one trade, then work backwards to a lot size. Most traders pick a small percentage, often one or two percent, so a run of losses does not wipe the account. The calculator on this page does that division for you: you enter the balance, the risk percentage and the stop distance, and it returns the lot size.

This order matters because it removes the temptation to trade big and hope. If your stop is far from your entry, the position must be small. If your stop is close, the position can be larger for the same risk. The money at risk stays the same either way.

A pip, a lot and pip value explained plainly

A pip is the smallest standard move in a currency pair's price, usually the fourth decimal place. A lot is the size of your trade. In forex, a standard lot is 100,000 units of the base currency, a mini lot is 10,000, and a micro lot is 1,000. Your lot size and the pip value together decide what each pip of movement is worth to you.

Pip value depends on the pair and on your account currency. A pip on a pair quoted in US dollars is not worth the same as a pip on a pair quoted in another currency, and converting to UGX adds another step. That is why the calculator shows the pip value it used rather than asking you to guess. If you want to check the result by hand, use the pip value shown next to the table.

What a broker asks for before a withdrawal

Brokers usually also ask for proof of address; requirements differ per firm. Every firm sets its own list, and prints it where the account is opened.

Where Ugandan traders get the inputs

Your account balance comes from your broker's platform or funding page. The risk percentage is your own decision, written down before you open the trade. The stop distance comes from your chart, in pips, based on where the trade idea is proven wrong.

Funding usually moves through Mobile Money, with MTN MoMo and Airtel Money the common rails, and bank transfer or card as alternatives. Any deposit or withdrawal fee, minimum or processing time is set by the firm you use, so read its funding page and confirm in the Mobile Money app before you send anything. Nothing on this page can tell you what those charges are.

Uganda is on East Africa Time, UTC+3, so the market hours you see on a chart are local. Sydney runs 00:00 to 09:00 EAT, Tokyo 03:00 to 12:00, London 11:00 to 20:00, and New York 15:00 to 00:00. The London and New York overlap, 15:00 to 20:00 EAT, is when activity is usually heaviest, which affects how far your stop needs to sit.

Limits and fees are set by the provider and the broker and change without notice, so they are not printed here. Check the figure in your provider's app and again on the broker's funding page, and take the money out the way you put it in.

Check who you are dealing with before you size anything

The Capital Markets Authority of Uganda regulates unit trust managers, fund managers, investment advisers, stock brokers, custodians, dealers and trustees. An online or leveraged foreign-exchange broker is not one of those categories, so a firm offering that service to Ugandan residents is working under a licence issued somewhere else. You can read the CMA Uganda licensed persons list at cmauganda.co.ug and see for yourself what is covered.

That does not tell you whether any particular firm is good or bad, and this page does not recommend one. It tells you that the licence question has an answer you can check, and that the answer is not the same as a Ugandan investment licence. Do that check before you fund an account, not after.

Position sizing limits what a single trade can cost you. It cannot limit what happens if the firm holding your money fails, so treat the two questions separately.

A register says whether a firm holds a licence on the day you look, and nothing about how it treats clients. The name worth searching is the legal entity in the footer, not the brand above it.

Sizing a trade in UGX means fixing your risk in UGX first, then converting

Most Ugandan traders fund accounts in USh through Mobile Money, but many pairs are priced in another currency. That mismatch is where sizing goes wrong. Decide the amount you are willing to lose, in UGX, before you look at any chart.

Next convert that UGX figure into the currency your account is denominated in, using the rate your broker or Mobile Money app shows at the time. Write the converted figure down. Do not re-convert later to make a trade look smaller than it is.

Only then work out the lot size from that fixed number. If the converted risk looks uncomfortable, the answer is a smaller lot or no trade, not a looser stop. The order is risk first, conversion second, size third.

A platform is software, not a safeguard: the same terminal is offered by licensed and unlicensed firms alike. Licensing lives on the register. Ratings and downloads are not evidence of it.

Your stop distance and your lot size pull against each other

A wide stop and a large lot cannot both be right for the same risk amount. If you widen the stop because the market is noisy, the lot must fall to keep the money at risk unchanged. Traders who widen the stop and leave the lot alone have quietly increased their risk.

This is the most common sizing failure seen on Ugandan accounts. It usually happens after a loss, when the temptation is to give the next trade more room without reducing size. The two changes cancel the discipline the calculator was meant to enforce.

Fix the stop from the chart first, based on where the idea is wrong. Then let the calculator produce the lot. If the resulting lot is too small to place, the trade is too expensive for your account, and skipping it is a valid outcome.

An indicative rate is for sizing a position in your head, not for settling one. What your broker converts at, against this rate, is a cost like any spread.

Round down, never up, when the calculated lot sits between two sizes

Calculators rarely return a lot size your platform accepts exactly. Brokers quote minimum trade sizes and step sizes, and the calculator output will often land between two of them. Always choose the smaller one. Rounding up breaches the risk limit you set.

The difference looks trivial on one trade. Repeated across many trades, rounding up turns a planned risk percentage into a higher real one, and the gap widens fastest on the trades that go wrong. The published minimum and step sizes sit on the broker's own trading specifications page.

If rounding down gives a size below the minimum, you cannot take that trade at your chosen risk. Either accept a smaller stop distance that the chart does not support, or leave the trade. Do not talk yourself into the minimum size as though it were your plan.

Recheck the inputs whenever funding or withdrawal changes your balance

Position sizing depends on account balance, and Ugandan accounts often move because of funding and withdrawals rather than trading. A Mobile Money deposit or a withdrawal back to MTN MoMo or Airtel Money changes the base the risk percentage applies to.

After any such movement, recalculate before the next trade. Sizing from a remembered balance is a quiet way to oversize. The same applies after a run of losses, when the balance is lower than the figure still in your head.

Keep the balance you use current, taken from the platform rather than from memory. Confirm what the broker counts as balance and what it counts as equity on its own funding and account pages. The two can differ once a position is open.

What is a lot size in forex?

A lot size is the number of currency units in your trade. A standard lot is 100,000 units, a mini lot is 10,000 and a micro lot is 1,000. You choose it after deciding your risk percentage and your stop distance, not before.

How do I work out pip value without a calculator?

Pip value follows from the pair, the lot size and your account currency. Because converting to UGX adds a step, the arithmetic is easy to get wrong by hand. Use the pip value the calculator displays, and check the live rate on your broker's platform if you want to confirm it.

Does position sizing guarantee I will not lose money?

No. It controls how much one trade can cost you if your stop is filled at the level you set. Slippage, gaps and firm-level risk sit outside that control. Size every trade the same way and treat the result as a limit, not a promise.

Leverage cuts both ways: losses on forex and CFDs can exceed what you deposited. Most retail traders lose. None of this is financial advice.
